Volunteers, based at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Newbridge, have been

engaged for some time in a campaign to persuade people to take more pride in their

 local community.

Actions always speak louder than words and that is why the group, known as TACT – Tabernacle Action Community Team – began a few years ago a Saturday morning drive to clean up litter from local parks and streets. A group of about 8 volunteers, made up of teenagers and adults, have been collecting between four and five bags of litter each session and they have been encouraged by the excellent support and advice received from Keep Wales Tidy.

In the last year, the team has been able to extend their activities to growing vegetables at a local allotment site and the fruits of their labour have already produced a good crop of broad beans and potatoes – some of which has been donated to the Tabernacle Community Foodbank.

TACT organiser Geoff Champion said: “People see us picking up litter and they are well pleased that we are out there helping the community. KWT and residents have helped us and we have received grant support via Caerphilly County Borough Council to buy equipment. The ongoing impact of Covid has restricted the group in recent months but we are gearing up for a busy spell in August and September.” He added that TACT was indebted to Tabernacle Church member John Palmer for

allowing the use of the allotment at Ashfield Road and to Barrie Williams who has worked hard to ensure the allotment stays in good order.
