GETTING READY FOR THE SEASON OF ADVENT
It’s hard to believe but summer has come and gone, the clocks have been put back an hour, the days are drawing in and the season of Advent is just around the corner. So what does this special festival mean to us? Here are some basic facts we need to know.
What does Advent mean? Advent is a term from the Latin word “adventus” which means “arrival”. It is a time of waiting for the arrival of Christmas, the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ to earth when He was born as a baby at Bethlehem about 2,000 years ago.
What is Advent? Advent is the new year of the Christian Church and the church session that leads to Christmas Day. Advent is the time when we remember that Jesus came into the world and that He also promised one day to return in all His glory.
When does Advent start? Advent begins on the Sunday nearest to the 30th November (St. Andrew’s Day) so this year that is the 29th November. It ends at midnight on Christmas Eve.
How should we celebrate Advent? There are many traditions associated with Advent but the most important thing is to celebrate that light is coming into the world and to look forward to the promise that Jesus is coming again.
We need to be shining lights for Jesus in this dark world. Ask God to help you to do that by the power of the Holy Spirit.
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”( John 8:12 NIV)
