ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEW TERM?
“(The people) replied: ‘Let us start rebuilding.’ So they began this good work.” Nehemiah 2:18
September is classed as being part of British summer time but for many of us it always feels like the start of a new term…. and, of course, for our children and grandchildren it marks the beginning of the new school and college year.
New things give us an opportunity to start again and to resolve that we will do better this time.
Nehemiah faced a new challenge. He had to lead the people to build a wall around their city, Jerusalem. The wall separated them from their enemies and other nations. It gave them a national identity. So they built new sections and rebuilt stretches where the old wall had crumbled.
Building the wall required planning, expertise, organisation, strength and determination on the part of the men. “So the wall was finished . . . in fifty and two days” (Neh. 6:15). But it was also God’s work. “When all our enemies heard . . . they were cast down . . . for they perceived that this work was wrought of our God” (Neh. 6:16).
Another vital element to the project was that the Scriptures were read and explained to the people. Nehemiah the leader had Ezra the priest build a pulpit from which to read the Word of God to the people. From morning till noon—four hours—the Word was read. “And Ezra brought the Word of God before the congregation . . . and he read therein . . . from the morning until midday before the men and women . . . and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law” (Neh. 8:2, 3).
We are told the people understood the Scriptures and they were happy to sign a covenant to commit themselves to this monumental task for God – there was no room for backsliders!
What new challenges do we face in the coming months? What “section of the wall” is God asking us to help build or rebuild in relation to our personal walk with the Lord Jesus Christ, church life, our family, friends and neighbours and the community in which we live? Remember, this is God’s work; study and seek to understand His Word, pray regularly and encourage one another in fellowship.
