SOME VITAL STATISTICS!

We live in an age that seems to be obsessed with gathering and analysing statistics. Performance management is based upon facts and figures whether we are talking about education, the Health Service, the economy or anything else you would like to mention! Even in sport, we are now regularly updated on “must know” facts such as the total number of metres a soccer player has run during a match; the speed at which a fast bowler can bowl a cricket ball down the pitch, and split times when athletes are racing around a running track!

Sometimes, however, it is beneficial to apply the vital statistics approach when studying God’s Word. For example, here is some core information and vital statistics about the Old Testament book of Leviticus:

Purpose: A handbook for the priests and Levites outlining their duties in worship, and a guidebook of holy living for the Hebrews.

 Author: Moses

 Date of events: 1445-1444 BC

Setting: At the foot of Mount Sinai. God is teaching the Israelites how to live as holy people.

Key verse: “Be holy because I, the Lord your God, am holy.” (Lev. 19:2)

Key people: Moses, Aaron, Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, Ithamar.

 Key place: Mount Sinai

Special feature: Holiness is mentioned more times (152) than in any other book of the Bible.

Read through Leviticus, rededicate yourself to holiness, worshipping God in private confession, public service and group celebration.
